An air conditioner with split unit works by extracting heat from a coolant, similar to the operation of a refrigerator. The coolant absorbs heat from the indoor air (via the indoor unit) and releases this heat to the outdoor air (via the outdoor unit). Inside the inner unit is a fan that pulls warm air out of the room and leads past a heat exchanger, through which a coolant flows. The warm air ensures that the coolant heats up and effectively extracts heat from the air. A compressor subsequently transports the heated air to a condenser in the outdoor unit. Here a process takes place whereby the gas condenses by contact with the outside air, allowing the coolant to cool and to absorb heat again.
The difference between split, multi-split and duo-split air conditioners lies in their configuration:
